Times Cited Count:32 Percentile:90.98(Nanoscience & Nanotechnology)Oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) FeCrAl ferritic steels are being developed as potential accident tolerance fuel cladding materials for the light water reactors (LWRs) due to significant improvement in steam oxidation by alumina forming scale and good mechanical properties up to high temperatures. In this study, the microstructural characteristics and tensile properties of the two FeCrAl ODS cladding tubes with different extrusion temperatures of 1100C and 1150C were investigated during processing conditions. While the hot extruded sample showed micron sized elongated grains with strong -fiber in 110 texture, cold pilger rolling process change the microstructure to submicron/micron size grain structure along with texture evolution to both -fiber (110 texture) and -fiber ({111} texture) via crystalline rotations. Subsequently, final annealing resulted in evolution of microstructure to large grain recrystallized structure starting at recrystallization temperature of 810-850C. Two distinct texture development happened in recrystallized cladding tubes, i.e., only large elongated grains of (110) 211 texture following extrusion temperature of 1100C; and two texture components of (110) 211 and {111} 112 following higher extrusion temperature of 1150C. The different texture development and retarding of recrystallization progress in 1100C-extruded cladding tubes were attributed to higher distribution of oxide particles.

Therefore, their material composition basically decides the sound quality and decay time rather than the skill of the player. In this study, specimens of cymbals to which Titanium, Zirconium and Iron were added were prepared. From the difference of diffraction rings by synchrotron radiation X-rays, the crystal structure of the specimens of cymbals prepared by various manufacturing processes was analyzed in order to investigate the relationship between the crystal structure associated with the material and manufacturing process used and the damping of the sound of cymbals. As a result, it was found that the changes in the crystal structure were due to the manufacturing process used. In addition, it was clarified that the changes affected the damping of the sound of cymbals.

ZnN is a possible candidate for the diluent material for nitride fuels containing transuranium elements. Pellets of inert matrix material ZrN, and surrogate nitride fuel material DyZrN, are fabricated for the purpose of investigating the crystal structure. Lattice parameters of DyZrN followed the Vegard's low, in spite of the large lattice mismatch ( 7%) between DyN and ZrN. Local structure analysis was performed by X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and atomic pair-distribution function (PDF) methods. The Zr-N nearest neighbor bond distance changed as changing the Dy composition. The complex local structure of DyN and ZrN is related to the preferable effects of ZrN.

Times Cited Count:3 Percentile:17.99(Physics, Condensed Matter)We measured neutron diffraction of powdered samples of ice containing impurities (e.g., potassium deuteroxide, sodium deuteroxide) to analyze the formation of ice XI, a deuterium-ordered phase of ice, from ice Ih, a disordered phase. We found that the diffraction profiles changed with time for several days at 62-70 K, which are below the transition temperature = 76 K. From the Rietveld analysis of the diffraction profiles, we determined the change of the structural parameters with the phase transition. The structural analysis provides direct evidence for the existence of deuteron-ordered arrangements in ice containing impurities below . On the basis of the Rietveld analysis, we obtained the mass fraction () of ice XI as functions of time and temperature. We report a structural observation for the nucleation and growth of ice XI under various conditions (such as temperature variations and impurity effects), which leads to understand whether or not f reaches unity at an infinite annealing time.

Times Cited Count:34 Percentile:88.89(Biochemical Research Methods)A neutron diffraction study has been carried out at 1.6 resolution on a mutant rubredoxin from using the BIX-3 single-crystal diffractometer at the JRR-3 reactor of JAERI. In order to study the unusual thermostability of rubredoxin from , the hydrogen-bonding patterns were compared between the native and a 'triple-mutant' variant where three residues were changed so that they are identical to those in a mesophilic rubredoxin. In the present study, some minor changes were found between the wild-type and mutant proteins in the hydrogen-bonding patterns of the Trp3/Tyr3 region. The H/D-exchange ratios in the protein were also studied. The results suggest that the backbone amide bonds near the four Cys residues of the FeS redox center are most resistant to H/D exchange. In addition, the 1.6 resolution of the present neutron structure determination has revealed a more detailed picture than previously available of some portions of the water structure, including ordered and disordered O-D bonds.

Times Cited Count:48 Percentile:61.13(Multidisciplinary Sciences)The structure of a rubredoxin (Rd) from , an organism that grows optimally at 100 C, was determined using the neutron single-crystal diffractometer for biological macromolecules (BIX-3) at the JRR-3 reactor of JAERI. Data were collected at room temperature up to a resolution of 1.5 , and the completeness of the data set was 81.9 %. The model contains 306 H atoms and 50 D atoms. A total of 37 hydration water molecules were identified. The model has been refined to final agreement factors of = 18.6 % and = 21.7 %. Several orientations of the O-D bonds of side chains, whose assignments from X-ray data were previously ambiguous, were clearly visible in the neutron structure. While most backbone N-H bonds had undergone some degree of H/D exchange throughout the molecule, five H atom positions still had distinctly negative (H) peaks. The neutron Fourier maps clearly showed the details of an extensive set of H bonds involving the ND terminus that may contribute to the unusual thermostability of this molecule.

A snow crystal scavenges earozol particles and trasfer various elements in atomosphere through heterogenious nucleation. The snow has many complicated crystal shapes which results in difficulty in comparison of its environmental purification function directly with that of raindrops. The replica of individual snow crystal grain was prepared by their immobilization on the collodion film. The replica samples were analized by micro-PIXE at JAERI and PIXE st Kyoto university. The following results are obtained: (1) Size(circumscribed diameter) of individual snow crystal are in the range of 0.12-2.5mm, (2)snow crystal grows from hexagnal plate to dendritic sectored plate, (3) major elements captured by a snow crystal are Si,S,K,Ca,Fe,S, (4)there is relation between snow crystal size and captured-element masses. The result leads us to presume the chemical inner-structure and the elemental mixing state in/on single snow crystal.

Pulsed laser deposition (PLD) with a KrF excimer laser was used to prepare epitaxial TiO films on a (0001) sapphire substrate. The crystalline structure and surface morphology of the films were then investigated as a function of the laser power density in the PLD. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy results showed that the films were composed of the (100) oriented rutile phase with a small amount of the (001) oriented anatase. The anatase-to-rutile ratio in such phase-mixed films was controlled by the laser power; the ratio increased as the power density decreased. From atomic force microscopy observations, the film deposited at the lowest power was found to have a rough surface consisting of coarse grains. This film exhibited the best photocatalytic performance during the decomposition of the organic dyes possibly due to the maximum relative content of anatase and the large surface area.
